US federal holidays 2026, 2027 and 2028 for your calendar
The eleven federal holidays, the days they are observed when they fall on a weekend, and the observances many calendars show.
Holidays shown: 2026, 2027, 2028. Dates checked against the official sources below on October 11, 2026. Make a calendar with these holidays.
The eleven federal holidays
Federal holidays are set by law (5 U.S.C. 6103) and apply to federal employees; banks, schools, state governments and private employers usually follow most of them but are not required to. The names used here are the legal ones: the third Monday in February is “Washington’s Birthday”, which most calendars and stores call Presidents’ Day.
Juneteenth National Independence Day, June 19, is the newest; it became a federal holiday in 2021. Columbus Day, the second Monday in October, is also marked by many states and cities as Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
When a holiday falls on a weekend
A holiday on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before, and one on a Sunday on the Monday after. Both days appear on your calendar: the date itself with the holiday’s name and the day off marked “(observed)”. In 2026 Independence Day is a Saturday, so Friday, July 3 is the day off. In 2027 Juneteenth and Christmas are Saturdays (observed Friday, June 18 and Friday, December 24) and Independence Day is a Sunday (observed Monday, July 5).
New Year’s Day 2028 is a Saturday, so it is observed on Friday, December 31, 2027. OPM lists that day under 2028; on your calendar it appears on December 31, 2027.
Observances that are not days off
Tick “Also show observances” to add Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Mother’s Day (second Sunday in May), Flag Day, Father’s Day (third Sunday in June), Halloween, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. They appear in gray so that they are not mistaken for days off. State holidays, such as Cesar Chavez Day or Patriots’ Day, are not included; add the ones you need as your own dates.
